Frequently Asked Questions

What are the style and format guidelines for academic pieces?
If you are submitting an academic piece, please write in 12-point font, using 1.0 spacing. If your piece requires citations, please use Chicago Author-Date in-text citations and include a reference list at the end of your submission. Refer to the Chicago Manual of Style and the Dïaspora Style Guide for more details. Please note that your bibliography is included in the word count of your piece. Do not use footnotes or endnotes in your submissions.
What formatting should I use for non-academic pieces?
For non-academic pieces (poetry, etc.) use formatting appropriate for the genre of the piece. However, always strive to keep your content easily readable and editable.
What kind of pieces do you accept?
We accept all kinds of work, including essays, poetry, stories, comedic sketches, art, and more!
What is the word-limit for submissions?
The nominal word-limit is 2000. However, if you have a piece that is over the limit but you still want to submit, please email us at info@diiaspora.org and we may be able to grant you an exception.
What should I write about?
Anything related to Ukraine or the Ukrainian diaspora is acceptable. Every issue has a new theme, the details of which can be found on our website and social media. If you have something to submit, even if you think it doesn’t fit with the theme, we are always happy to take a look.
What are the benefits of being published in Dïaspora?
Dïaspora Journal SCIO is an independent charity registered in Scotland. Our ISSN is held through the British Library. As such, if you are published in our journal, your work will be archived at the British Library (as well as the National Library of Scotland) and sent to university databases around the UK. Additionally, we collaborate with the Ukrainian Politics Network at the University of Edinburgh as well as the Department of Central and East European Studies at the University of Glasgow. Because of this, you may have the opportunity to present your work at academic conferences and build connections with some of the leading academics in Ukrainian and Eastern European Studies.
What does the editing process involve?
The editing process for Dïaspora is rigorous. Once you submit a piece for publication, the publishing team will decide whether or not to include it (sometimes we chose to wait and publish it later – see below). Then, if your piece is selected, it will undergo two rounds of editing. You will be consulted by the editors after each round to ensure that no substantive changes to the meaning of the submission have been made. If, at any time, you have questions or concerns about changes made to your piece during the editing process, please contact the relevant editor (who will provide their contact details to you). If that isn’t possible, you can always email the Editor-in-Chief at ulrich.poehlmann@diiaspora.org
Why was my piece not accepted?
Your submission may not be accepted for publication for several reasons, but we will always strive to give you feedback. Please note that just because your piece was not accepted during the submission cycle you applied for, that does not mean it won’t be considered in the future (see below). Oftentimes, we receive pieces which simply don’t fit in with the theme of the specific edition we are working on but work perfectly for future editions.
If I submit a piece, and it is not accepted, do I have to resubmit it later, or is it automatically considered for future editions?
We keep all submissions we receive for at least two more submission cycles if they are not published immediately after being received. If you do not want your piece to be considered for future editions, please specify that in your submission. If you would like to update your piece, please do so through a new submission and note that it is an update.
Will I retain the copyright to my own work?
Yes! Our authors always retain full rights to their own work. When you submit, you are only granting us the right to publish your work and distribute it royalty free. We will always credit you as the author in any published material. For more information you can read our Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy or email us.
Can I publish my work elsewhere?
No. You cannot publish the exact same work in two different journals; it is considered a serious breach of academic and literary ethics.
How can I get more involved with the journal?
You can apply to join the editing staff or graphic design team through our website: www.diiaspora.org.
What organisations is Dïaspora affiliated with?

We rely on these organisations, as well as other public and private donations, for funding.
